Eminent British physicist, Steven Hawking, has made news recently by suggesting that we should be careful about sending signals out in to space in hopes of First Contact. Hawking suggests that it is possible that we may attract marauding, resource hungry aliens looking for planets to plunder after exhausting their own spot in the universe.

Hawking explains his ideas on a new series, Into the Universe, on Discovery Channel, saying, “like us they would probably have evolved from a species used to exploiting whatever it can.”  While sci-fi fans may brighten at the thought of a renowned scientist joining the ranks of those questioning the unknown, Hawking’s statement on our resource management has meaning for all of us as we note the passing of another Earth Day, wait for new green tech to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and watch the collapsed oil rig spilling 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico.

Panoramix View: It’s doubtful that the threat of an alien invasion will spur any action but green/clean tech IS the future and a business appropriate consideration should be in every strategic plan.
